Small Town

The transformation of Middleton was astounding. Forget the glow of Christmas lights; when the school goes to state championships this small town comes alive. School flags and colors are suddenly everywhere. Everyone wore school colors or sweatshirts. There was a buzz all around town. Conversations take on an excited tone. The local paper did a cover story on the team and the next week they did one on the coach.

From slightly depressed blue color town to an energized hub of activity, excitement and support. Old men discussed strategies and scouting possibilities. Little boys spent days shooting hoops in driveway, school playground and the rec center. The members of the team were famous. Everywhere they went they were greeted with hospitality befitting a king. They got food for free at local restaurants and a few of the guys even got free car washes.

When they lost that game, nobody seemed to notice. They were welcomed back with the same open arms and friendliness we had before. They still were local heroes. Of course it eventually died down, but it was great while it lasted. That is just a small town for you.
