The Hero

I was never very good at sports, but I joined every team and played any sport my mom would let me play. My favorite was basketball. I was the worst player on the team.
I would always take the shot, no matter where I was standing on the court. All enthusiasm, no talent.

I sat the bench for the first three years I played in high school. My senior year, however, I got the chance to save the day.

It was a big game. If we won we would be one game away from state. Something bad happened, though. Through a series of unfortunate accidents and foul outs our team was being blown away. We only needed one more basket, but there weren’t enough players. The coach had no choice but to send me in. He told me that under no circumstances should I try to shoot the ball. I was in there to guard only.

In the last few seconds, as the clock ticked down, I was set up for the perfect shot. If I made it I would be a hero. I knew I probably wouldn’t make it, but there was no time to think this out. I went for it. Against all odds, nothing but net.
